SUPPORTING TIM HORTONS® COMMUNITIES ONE CAMPER AT A TIME
SUPPORTING
TIM HORTONS®
COMMUNITIES ONE
CAMPER AT A TIME
A message from the Foundation,
Tim Hortons® Foundation Camps has been the signature charity, and crown jewel of community support for the Tim Hortons® brand, since its inception in 1974.
Over the past 45 years we have made a profound, positive impact on the lives of more than 295,000 youth from disadvantaged, at-risk circumstances. And since making impactful program investments in 2017 which saw us committing to our campers for multiple years and return visits to camp, versus a single, one-time experience with us, that impact has deepened.
We realized the importance of entering their lives at that critical transition between childhood and adolescence, between elementary school and secondary school – when the influences of society, peers and adults mean everything. And we knew that our program, well designed and led with passion, could substantially increase the impact we could have on their futures.
And we have all of you – the Tim Hortons corporate team, Tim Hortons restaurant owners, managers and team members, and our corporate and community sponsors – to thank. This Foundation only exists because of your generosity and support.
Together we have built something that is truly unique, inspiring and powerful. On behalf of all of us at the Foundation, and the kids we serve, thank you.

WHO WE ARE
We are a charitable, leadership development organization that supports kids from disadvantaged circumstances between the ages of 12 to 16. Through a multi-year, camp-based program, they learn skills like leadership, resilience, and responsibility, empowering them to change their stories for the better and ultimately break the cycle of poverty.
With seven camps across North America that run year-round Summer and School Programs, Tim Hortons® Foundation Camps invests in youth from every Tim Hortons® community, and is entirely funded by restaurant owners, guests, and sponsors through Tim Hortons Camp Day, fundraising events, and year-round donations collected through restaurant coin boxes.
WHO WE SUPPORT

Youth from low-income homes are at risk of repeating the cycle of poverty and face additional obstacles and pressures on academic performance, relationship building and physical and emotional well-being. With 1 in 5* (or 1.2 million) children in Canada living in poverty, a multi-year Tims Camps experience designed for lasting positive development, can mean the difference between a young person struggling or a young person thriving.
We work with Tim Hortons® restaurant owners, schools from priority neighbourhoods, and youth-serving agencies like Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and Children’s Aid, to identify kids that would benefit from a Tim Hortons® Foundation Camps experience – all at no cost to them or their families.
WHAT WE DO
Multi-day, overnight camp experiences are uniquely powerful in quickly building critical skills and strengths in youth. Strengthening social ties and community connections can protect and help young people cope with challenging circumstances.
The Summer Program which runs through June, July and August, serves youth ages 12-16, who participate in five, nine-day visits to camp over the course of five years. Each year of the program features increasingly challenging tasks, from traditional camp activities like archery, canoeing, and high ropes, and multiday wilderness expeditions, to facilitated workshops focused on academic and financial literacy that help teach them how to set goals, create a budget, apply for post-secondary scholarships, and build a career path. The Summer Program intentionally supports youth to develop essential life skills and coping strategies to help them achieve success in school, find meaningful employment, and become positive, contributing members of their communities.
While the Summer Program is most well-known, the School Program which serves youth in grades 6-8 and takes place during the school year (Fall, Winter, Spring), actually reaches more participants. Partnering with schools from low-income neighbourhoods, students participate in two, three-day overnight visits to camp with their classmates, teachers and volunteers during their academic year. At camp and between visits, students work to achieve personal goals that support further development regarding personal wellbeing (respectful and caring classroom behaviour), academic success (commitment to schoolwork), and community connection (students take action to create social change by completing a community service project).
Whether at camp or back home in their communities between visits, our youth work to build social, emotional and innovation skills, as well as behaviours like volunteerism and motivation to learn, so they become civically and academically engaged, and successfully transition to adulthood.
At camp I discovered that I am a leader. I learned that true leadership doesn’t mean being outgoing, but [having] confidence in what you’re doing is essential. This information helped me on my journey to create and facilitate community and environmental improvement groups outside of camp.
– Isabella, Camp Alumni
I think that Tim Hortons Camp is a great way of building a strong community between different types of people. I’ve learned so much throughout my years attending camp, and I am so grateful that I got a chance to be a part of something so wonderful.
– Emily, Camper

CHANGING STORIES
In advance of Tim Hortons® Camp Day on June 5 we shared the True Stories of two incredible Camp alumni – Shelagh and Nicole.
Through Shelagh and Nicole’s True Stories, Tim Hortons® Guests learned for the first time about the importance of empowering youth from disadvantaged circumstances to believe in their own potential and change their stories for the better.
Tim Hortons® Foundation Camps believes every kid deserves the chance to change their story for the better. See how Shelagh and Nicole changed theirs.

Without the support of Restaurant Owners, Team Members and Guests on Camp Day – the Tim Hortons® Foundation Camps single largest annual fundraiser – thousands of youth would not have the opportunity to attend one of seven Tims Camps for a life-changing, multi-year camp experience this year. Thank you all for your dedication, support and creative fundraising in helping to make Camp Day 2019 so memorable.

Campers who come from challenging home environments were able to feel supported.
Campers tried new things and even if they didn’t always succeed, they were supported to know “that’s ok!”
Campers were supported in times of need and were believed in so they could learn to believe in themselves.
Campers have gone back to their homes, schools and communities knowing how to support others.

A NAME THAT DEFINES US
With Camp Day being our largest annual fundraiser, and with all of our leading youth development programs taking place at our seven camps across North America, we wanted to make a small but meaningful update to our name to better define who we are, what we do, and where we do it. So in 2019, we changed our name to Tim Hortons® Foundation Camps to better connect us to camp and Camp Day, and also to our philanthropic needs as a Foundation.

PROGRAMMING

WHAT ARE PROGRAM OUTCOMES AND WHY DO WE FOCUS ON THEM?
Outcomes are the learning goals our campers achieve as a result of our program. These can be changes or shifts in campers’ abilities to build positive relationships, increase self-awareness, and develop positive identities, attitudes and behaviours.
HOW WE MEASURE SUCCESSFUL OUTCOMES
Our Tims Camps OUTCOMES FRAMEWORK is focused on developing critical life skills – like resilience, persistence and responsibility – that help youth from low-income homes thrive and transition successfully to adulthood. Using rigorous research practices through camper and teacher impact surveys, we measure our campers’ progress on key youth development outcomes, and then use these results to learn and make adjustments to our program ensuring we’re meeting the needs of the campers we serve.

THE DIFFERENCE WE’VE MADE
Early evidence from our multi-visit camper and teacher impact survey data shows a positive impact in camper development, growth, and achievement in these important life skills and outcomes:

% of campers who reported an increase in these key outcomes:
83% in positive identity
80% in positive behaviour
60% in positive connections

% of campers who reported an increase in these key outcomes:
85% in interpersonal skills
80% in cognitive skills
58% in organizational skills

% of Teachers surveyed reported an increase in these key outcomes:
83% in student volunteerism
69% in positive classroom behaviour
39% in students’ motivation to learn
FINANCIAL LITERACY 101
FINANCIAL LITERACY 101
Parental influences, and high-school quality, account for 84% of the reason Canadian youth coming from low-income families don’t go to University (Frenette, 2007)
In 2019, we enhanced our Financial Literacy to our programming curriculum. Developed with the help of our teaching partners, the goal of this program is to build campers’ understanding and awareness of often confusing and complex money matters to build financial literacy skills, increase job readiness and determine how to apply and pay for post-secondary school. Teaching financial literacy to campers from low-income homes helps to break down barriers to post-secondary education and gives our youth the tools to imagine a brighter future after high school and camp.
Teaching financial literacy at camp isn’t always about numbers and doesn’t look the same as it does in the classroom. At Tims Camps, we start by focusing on patience, self-awareness, and organization. Building these skills first can be vital in helping campers choose post-secondary and employment options that are both interesting and rewarding.

POST-SECONDARY SCHOOL VISITS
Campers get to go visit a college, university, or CEGEP institution to get a better understanding of what to expect and to picture their life as a post-secondary student!

BUDGET PLANNING
Campers go through a game that’s similar to the game of life, however it takes place through their time at post-secondary, learning all of the expenses that may come up and how to cover them.

INTERVIEW PREP
Campers get to review (fake) resumes and decide which ones would make the cut. They also perform mock interviews and interview their counsellors preparing them for the world of work.
GENDER INCLUSIVE CABIN GROUP – PILOT
At Tims Camps, we embrace our campers and families of all identities and are deeply committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment affirming campers for who they are. In response to feedback from campers, and spearheaded by our Youth Advisory Council, we piloted mixed gender cabin groups at Tim Horton Camp Whiteshell in Manitoba, Tim Horton Onondaga Farms in Ontario, and Tim Horton Children’s Ranch in Alberta in 2019. These cabin arrangements were offered to campers on an opt-in basis. Feedback from Campers and parents/guardians was very positive. Here is what one parent wrote to us about her child’s experience.
My son returned from Camp Whiteshell yesterday. This was his third experience [at Tims Camps] but his first time with the mixed gender cabin. He absolutely loved the mixed cabin. He said having both genders in there really gave personality to the group, it wasn’t just a bunch of boys who felt the need to be competitive. Thank you Tim Hortons® [Foundation] Camps for giving my son such a great experience this year and for coming up with a mixed gender cabin [option]!
YAC
YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL

OUR CAMPERS HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF THE FOUNDATION
Two years ago we launched a Youth Advisory Council (YAC) consisting of sixteen regionally representative campers, or camp alumni, between the ages of 15-19 who demonstrated professionalism, empathy and understanding, strong teamwork and communication skills, good judgement and a passion for the Foundation. These youth support the Foundation in an advisory capacity by amplifying the youth voice in our decision-making. Our 2018/2019 YAC helped influence the Foundation on decisions related to gender-inclusive cabin groups, camper application process, camper support programs, camper feedback, staff recruitment, branding and fundraising.
The Foundation has taught me to be proud of my accomplishments and that no matter where we come from, we can be something.
– Kai, Camp Alumni and Member of the Youth Advisory Council
It’s not about what we do at camp, it’s the lessons we learn and the lifelong connections we build at Tim Horton Camps that make it life-changing.
– Catherine, Camp Alumni and Member of the Youth Advisory Council

FUNDRAISING
GIVE THE GIFT OF TIMS CAMPS
In 2019, Tims Camps launched our first-ever symbolic giving website which gives donors a selection of symbolic, tangible gifts to choose from including a 9-day camper experience, a family style meal for a cabin group, gear packs for wilderness expeditions, bus transportation, and more. There is also a special, personalized e-card feature which allows donors to notify a friend/family member that a “Gift of Camp” has been purchased on their behalf.
FOR THE CAMPS
In 2017, an ambitious and passionate group of Tims restaurant owners, employees and Camp friends climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in support of Tim Hortons® Foundation Camps and raised more than $600,000! This group was once again planning on embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to climb Mount Everest in 2020 with the hope of raising $750,000. Unfortunately this incredible fundraiser has been postponed in light of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The fundraising committee is working with travel and health officials in Nepal to reschedule the climb. More details on this event will be shared when they become available. Stay tuned!

EVEREST IN MIAMI!
At this year’s Tim Hortons Owners Convention, we dedicated the theme of our exhibit booth to the fearless and passionate group of 40 Restaurant Owners and supporters who are climbing to the Mount Everest Base Camp in April 2020 on our behalf. In addition, proceeds from our Foundation Silent Auction and Tims Camps Tuck Shop helped us raise more than $400,000 for this incredible Foundation fundraiser!
TIM HORTONS® 2019 SNOWFLAKE CAMPAIGN
In 2019, Tim Hortons® Restaurant Owners helped us Give the Gift of Camp to youth from disadvantaged circumstances by asking guests for a $1 (or more!) donation to the Tim Hortons® Foundation Camps in exchange for their name on a Snowflake to be displayed in their local restaurant. This campaign raised more than $435,000!

THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERS
Thank you to our corporate camp champions! Tim Hortons® Foundation Camp programs would not be possible without the support of our amazing partners. We are so grateful to the following corporate supporters who are committed to empowering youth to reach their full potential. Thank you for believing in the power of camp and community, and for helping youth find their own success and thrive as contributing members of their communities.

TIMS CAMPS CORPORATE PARTNER HIGHLIGHT – HERSHEY
Hershey has been a proud supporter of Tims Camps for more than 10 years. This year, they visited Tim Horton Onondaga Farms and provided all of our campers with a Hershey’s S’more Kit to send home to a loved one and ‘spread s’more love.’ This experience was captured in an online campaign to help tell the story of Tim Hortons® Foundation Camps and the positive impact we are making in the lives of youth across North America.

GET YOUR 50/50 TICKET!
We have been a charitable partner of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Canadian Football team for the past few years – benefitting from two annual 50/50 fundraisers. On November 2, 24 Foundation staff, family, friends and supporters braved the cold for a good cause by selling 50/50 tickets at the Hamilton TiCats vs. Toronto Argos game at Tim Hortons® Field in Hamilton. This event helped raise nearly $27,000 for the Foundation to help send kids to camp. Thanks to everyone who attended and purchased a 50/50 ticket. With even more volunteers, we could double or triple that number, so we encourage all Foundation Champions, Restaurant Managers and Team Members to help at future games.
Our goal is to engage additional charitable partners like these to help spread the word of the Foundation and raise funds!

CALLING ALL FOUNDATION CHAMPIONS!
Inspired by the passion and commitment of the Tim Hortons Restaurant Owner community, in 2019 we launched the Foundation Champions. This group provides an opportunity for Restaurant Owners that are dedicated to our cause, to learn more about the impactful work of the Foundation and provide feedback and insights into how the Foundation can better support them. With more than 150+ Champions, we look forward to growing this important group in 2020. Join the Foundation Champions today – and our online Workplace by Facebook community group – to stay connected with updates and stories from the Foundation. By joining this online community, you can also chat with other Champions and Foundation staff, weigh in on Foundation decisions through polls, find out how you can support at fundraising events and more.

2019 FUNDRAISING EVENTS
Tims Camps is lucky to have the support of passionate volunteers and fundraising event planning committees who host, organize and execute events each year. A special thanks to all the generous sponsors and guests who help make these events so successful by contributing their time and in-kind donations on our behalf.
